Cathedral of Saints Simeon and Anna

Raiņ a iela 5, Jelgava, LV-3001

Description:

The construction of the church of Saints Simeon and Anna was started in 1774 by decree of Catherine II. The cathedral was built according to the project of F. B. Rastrelli. The building was built in the Russian Baroque style, had only one entrance and was richly decorated with wood carvings. In 1850, the church received the status of a cathedral.

At the end of the 19th century, the cathedral had to be expanded, since it no longer accommodated all believers. During the construction work, the mortgage board of Catherine II was discovered.

During World War II, the cathedral was seriously damaged, but its restoration was undertaken only after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Due to lack of funds, no one is trying to restore the former luxury, but simply try to preserve what is left.
