Spilve Airport
Description:
Spilve Airport was one of the most important airports in Riga during the existence of the Latvian SSR, as well as the main airport in Riga until 1986. Nowadays, it needs major reconstruction and is used only for flights on small aircraft. The airport is capable of receiving aircraft weighing up to 6 tons. The length of the runway is only 1600 meters, and the width is 50 meters.
From 1959 to 1961, the airport fleet was replenished with new aircraft, such as the Yak-12, An-2, Il-14. Since 1983, there is a base of the air squadron for the use of aviation in the national economy. Since 1986, mainly commercial and sanitary flights have departed from Spilva airport, and after the declaration of independence of Latvia, it gradually began to decline.
Recently, private companies have begun to renovate the airport. At the moment, the Aviation Museum is located in its building, and the territory itself is preparing for large-scale and expensive development, as a result of which they plan to create an artificial town, most of which will serve as a museum and the restoration of the airfield.
