Learn and love Kaunas in 9 hours.
Description:
Kaunas is a beautiful city with a rich history and a lot of interesting things. I promise to tell you about the history of the city and immerse in its life – to do everything to make you feel and love Kaunas forever!
We will go on an excursion to the second most important and largest Lithuanian city - Kaunas. Kaunas has existed since the XIV century. The city stands in a picturesque place of connection of the two main rivers of the country Neris and Nyamunasa.
Our informative walk around the city will begin at the walls of the medieval Kaunas Castle, standing in a beautiful place on a high river bank. Kaunas Castle was the very first building of the city, and later a settlement grew around the castle, which later turned into a very beautiful and modern city.
I will tell you some legends about the founding of the city, and you will be able to remember the story you like.
The city is famous for its medieval square. Here you will see the building of the Town Hall, which due to its remarkable appearance received a very poetic name “White Swan”. At first glance, it seems that you can get acquainted with this place just by walking around the Town Hall. But in fact, it is easy to miss the main thing: behind the front facades, red Gothic brick and architecture of different centuries there is a rich, eventful history, and this excursion is a chance to look at the appearance of the city more closely and learn everything about the life of the city in the past and the features of today.
Walking along its cozy streets, you will feel the amazing medieval atmosphere of ancient Kaunas. During the tour, your special attention will be drawn to the medieval residential house of the Hanseatic merchant - the House of Perkunas (Thunder) - one of the most original buildings in Lithuania, built in the style of "blazing Gothic". During the tour you will see the longest bridge in the world.
In the old town you will admire the largest Gothic church in Lithuania, which is more than 600 years old. You will be particularly impressed by the contrast between the rather harsh appearance of the cathedral, consecrated in honor of Saints Peter and Paul and the elegant baroque interior of this temple. If you are lucky, you will hear the amazing sound of the organ that usually accompanies every service.
Indescribable delight is provided when exploring the city from the observation deck on the hill of Alexotas. Being there, you will get the most complete idea of the city, its special location, the beauty of the Kaunas landscape.
If you want to have lunch, we will go to the New Town of Kaunas and there we will walk along the longest pedestrian alley in Europe (as the citizens themselves claim) - Laisves Alleye. It's a boulevard. This street is called “Little Paris”. It is here that a new part of the history of Kaunas begins – already as the temporary capital of Lithuania, which reflects the interwar architecture of Lithuanian modernism.
The tour program includes a visit to the largest monastery in Lithuania Pažaylis. Not all tourists who come to the “most Lithuanian city” know that the main architectural treasure of the country is located 12 kilometers from Kaunas.
In the Pažaylis Monastery you will find a lot of new and unusual things for yourself: an interesting history of the monastery, curious facts about the life of monks in the past; an unusual hexagonal church; secrets of the monastery buildings built in the Italian Baroque style; a beautiful combination of colored frescoes and white lipnina; delightful wooden carved panels in the sacristy and prayer halls, and much more.
