Kaunas Castle
Papilio gatvė 3-5, Kaunas 44275, Litva
Description:
Kaunas Castle is an ancient defensive fortress located in the Lithuanian city of Kaunas. In former times, the castle was used as an important strategic point built to repel attacks by the Teutonic Crusader Knights.
Kaunas Castle is a very, very old building. The first records of it belong to the fourteenth century, when it was already partially destroyed during the next assault. The castle was rebuilt. But in the seventeenth century it suffered again, only this time from natural disasters - the foundation washed away by the river, and the whole tower was washed away by a stormy stream. By then, the castle had lost its exceptional strategic importance and no complete restoration had been carried out.
Kaunas Castle is an important architectural monument and the only building of its kind in Lithuania. Due to its Gothic architecture and venerable age, Kaunas Castle invariably attracts the attention of tourists, so its full restoration and organization within its walls of the historical museum are planned for the near future.
