Kaunas Zoo

Radvilenu, 21, Kaunas

Description:

Kaunas Zoo is the only zoo in Lithuania, which is located a few blocks east of the Old Town, in an oak forest near the Gristupis River. The official opening took place on July 1, 1938, on the initiative of Professor Tadas Ivanauskas. At that time there were only 40 animals.

Today’s zoo is a 15.9-hectare park with centuries-old oak trees and street art and sculptures. The zoo consists of 11 departments with more than 130 employees. The number of fauna living in the zoo is quite impressive: almost 3000 animals, birds, fish and bastards from all over the planet. There is also a zoological museum, attractions and various entertainment for children and their parents. Kids can ride ponies and donkeys, and adults can pet the llama, who walks freely around the zoo. Kaunas lamas are a local landmark and the pride of the citizens. They take part in city parades and processions along the central street of Kaunas - Laisves Alley.

In April 2011, for the first time in 20 years, a kangaroo was born in Kaunas Zoo. In terms of area and number of animals, the Lithuanian Zoo can be equated with the average European Zoo. The zoo is owned by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums and participates in the breeding program for rare and endangered species. He is also a member of the International Association of Zoo Teachers and the International Species Information System.
