Pajaislis monastery

T. Masiulio g. 31, Kaunas LT 524236

Description:

Pajaislis Monastery is one of the best in the beauty of Northern Europe and the standard of Baroque architectural style. The monastery rises on the shore of the Kaunas Sea and is located twelve kilometers from the center of Kaunas. I must say that during its existence, and the temple was built at the end of the XVII century, it was often used for other purposes. It housed an archive, a psychiatric hospital, a camp and many other organizations.

After the building was restored, the monastery became a place of solitude for those who think about eternity, believers and tourists. The latter are always welcomed by the sisters of the Order of St. Casimir, hospitably opening the doors of the monastery.

On the territory of the temple there is the grave of the author of the music of the hymn “God Save the Tsar”, composer Alexei Lvov, and in the Pazhaislis Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary there is a miraculous image of the Virgin with the Child. In addition, the monastery is known for its small nondescript door 50 cm high, behind which hides an underground passage. In the old days, the tunnel stretched for 12 km and led to Kaunas. Unfortunately, over the past centuries, the underground passage was almost completely covered with earth and could disappear forever, but, thanks to the efforts of archaeologists, volunteers and novices of the monastery, it is gradually excavated.

Every summer, the monastery hosts a festival of classical and church music. In the main cathedral of Pazhaislis, you can hear performances of Lithuanian and foreign orchestras and chamber ensembles.

The monastery operates from Tuesday to Friday from ten a.m. to five p.m., and on Saturday from ten a.m. to four p.m.

Admission ticket for adults costs 10 Lt, for children and pensioners - 5 Lt.
