Devil's Museum

64 Putvinskio St, Kaunas LT-44211, Lithuania

About the company:

Kaunas Devil Museum is the only museum of this kind in the world. It was created in 1966, and the basis of the exposition was the private collection of the artist Antanas Zhmuydzinavičius, who for many years collected various "evil spirits" - burrows, devils, witches and other creatures.

The very first drawing was presented to the artist in 1906, and according to the artist's plan, it was necessary to collect thirteen devils - "a damn dozen". The number 13 was a lucky number for Antanas. Gradually, the fame of the strange collector of "devils" became more and more, and with it the number of exhibits. This case so fascinated Zhmuydzinavičius that as a result he collected not one, but as many as 20 dozen - 260 devils of different suits.

Among the exhibits of the museum are drawings of clay, wood, various metals, leather, plastic and even very unusual materials. All the inhabitants of the museum have a different mood - they are ferocious, playful, and sad. Here are not only figurines, but also icons, candy boxes, mugs, pens, ashtrays, candlesticks, canes, pipes in the form of devils. In the exposition there are Ukrainian features from the fairy tale “Evenings on a farm near Dikanka”, and the Moldovan “hell on a tobacco leaf” (it is no secret that tobacco was considered a damn potion), and the Polish “jester devil”, who served seven years in farm labor for a poor man for a bad joke, and even “Leningrad devil after the blockade”. This is not all the exhibits of the museum, the collection is constantly replenished, and anyone has the opportunity to make an original gift to the museum.
