Myronis Museum

Lithuania, Kaunas, Rotuses aikste 13

About the company:

The Myronis Museum is located in an ancient mansion of the XVIII century, on the Town Hall Square, in Kaunas. In this house once lived “Lithuanian Pushkin”, and now you can see the recreated atmosphere of an eight-room apartment, the writer’s office, personal belongings, works, as well as a huge collection of books and manuscripts of Lithuanian authors from ancient times to the XX century.

There are interesting exhibits: a musical door, which when opened plays a mechanical melody, a three-dimensional image of Christ above the bed, causing awe. The museum has two interesting expositions – documentary and memorial, which harmoniously combine with each other.

The documentary exposition is the largest literary exposition in Lithuania, contains documents, manuscripts, books, works of art, including folklore, and presents the history of the development of Lithuanian literature. The memorial exposition is dedicated directly to Jonas Mačiulis (Mayronis is a literary pseudonym), one of the largest Lithuanian poets (1862-1932). Literary critic E. Shklyar in 1925 said that Lithuania without Myronis is like Russia without Pushkin, Poland without Senkevich, Latvia without Rainis. This poet spent 30 years chanting his homeland and was the creator of “national romanticism” in Lithuanian literature. Myronis is a clergyman, prelate and preacher, professor of the Roman Catholic Theological Academy in St. Petersburg, and later also a teacher of the University of Vilna. The house in which the museum is located is an architectural monument of the XVIII century.
