Museum of Medicine and Pharmaceuticals
Lithuania, Kaunas, Rotuses street 28
About the company:
The Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy is a museum in Kaunas, which was established in 1936 by the staff of the Lithuanian Association of Pharmacists and the Lithuanian Association of Pharmacists. All pharmacies received requests to contribute to the development of the museum by collecting and transferring antique pharmacy items and documents. Pharmacists responded to this request and sent many valuable exhibits to Kaunas: ancient monographs, medical dishes, herbaria, furniture, scales, and so on.
In 1937, employees rented a room on Donelaicio Street, where they arranged an exhibition of old Lithuanian pharmacy items. In the summer of 1973, in the main building of the Kaunas Medical Institute, a place was allocated for the exhibition of the museum. The Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy was opened for students of the therapeutic and pharmaceutical faculties and guests of the Institute. In 1987, the restoration of an ancient house built in the XVI century was completed on the Kaunas Town Hall Square, where the Museum of the History of Medicine and Pharmacy of Lithuania was transferred.
The exposition of the museum is thematically divided into medical and pharmaceutical parts. The museum collection consists of personal belongings of pharmacists and Lithuanian doctors, medical instruments, devices, antique pharmacist dishes, flasks, mortars, bottles, equipment for hospitals and pharmacies. The museum has more than 17,000 exhibits. Here you can see the conditions in which pharmacists used to work, and what the old pharmacy looked like.
