City of Melakka
Description:
Malacca is located on the west coast of Malaysia, between the states of Negeri Sembilan and Johor. In the past, it served as a key gateway for merchants from Asia, India and China, attracting them to trade in gold, spices, opium, tea, silk, tobacco and perfumes. Founded by Prince Parameswara, Malacca became a center of commerce connecting East and West. Here alternated periods of colonization by the Portuguese, Dutch and British.
Malacca, the oldest colonial city in Asia, still retains the architectural traces of its previous rulers. The local population reflects many cultural, traditional and culinary heritages. The city is divided into two parts: old and new. The old town is more compact and rich in historical monuments.
Among them are the Portuguese settlement, the Dutch government building, the old buildings of the Porte de Santiago and the Baba-Nyonya house. Historical artifacts are located in the city center and along the riverbank. St. Paul's Hill with the Portuguese Fort A Famosa and St. Paul's Church rises next to the town square.
To the west of the Malacca River stretches the quarter of Chinatown, where narrow streets with shops, shops and temples bring pleasure to tourists. To the right of Chinatown is one of the oldest mosques in Malaysia - Kampung Hulu, built in 1728 and is an example of Melakian architecture.
