Red Square
Jalan Gereja, Melaka, Malaysia
Description:
Melaka has its own “Red Square”, named for the red buildings built by the Dutch from materials imported from Europe. It is the most picturesque square in the whole country. It used to be the center of the Dutch administration.
The most beautiful building of the square is “Stadthuys” (literally translated as “the Town Hall”). It was built in the seventeenth century as a residence for the Dutch governor and his deputies. Now the Ethnographic Museum is located in the Town Hall building. Near the Town Hall is the Church of Christ, which was built in 1753. It is the oldest Protestant church in Malaysia. Between the church and Laxaman Road are the Youth Museum and the Art Gallery. Next to the buildings is a beautiful fountain dedicated to Queen Victoria. It was built in 1901. Another important landmark of the square is the Red Clock Tower, erected in 1886 in honor of a generous Chinese tycoon named Tan Beng Swee. Some people call her "Tan Beng Swee Klok Thauer."
