Karaouin University Mosque

The Arabic name - Jami al-Karaouin (Cathedral Mosque of the Kairouans) - the building owes its founders, natives of Kairouan, who largely ensured its rapid construction. Al-Karaouin Mosque is also known as one of the oldest universities.

Located at the crossroads of cultural contacts of the Arab and Berber world, having experienced the creative efforts of masters of North Africa and Southern Spain, successfully combining the building traditions of three continents - Asia, Africa and Europe, al-Karaouin became an encyclopedia of Maghreb architecture, clearly illustrating the stages of its formation and maturity.
