Mosque tomb of Sultan Mulay Idris II

Zaouia de Moulay Idriss, Fes El Bali, Fes, Morocco

Description:

Among the religious sights of Fez, the Great Mosque and the mausoleum of Sultan Mulay-Idris II deserve special attention. They contain valuable historical artifacts, and the decoration of the halls remains intact for several centuries.

The Moulay Idris Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in the city of Fez, it was built in the 9th century. In it rests the ashes of the founder of the city, the highly revered ruler Mulay Idris - in a specially built mausoleum. The mosque is characterized by the simplicity of lines and lack of decor, such were the principles of architecture at the time of its creation. It is decorated with a tall minaret built in the late 19th century. Its feature is that it has a cylindrical shape, while usually minarets have a quadrangular slice. The green minaret of the mosque is decorated with Arabic inscriptions around the circle, it stands out beautifully against the white walls of the mosque.

Tourists can see the minaret and the outer walls of the mosque, but only Muslims can enter, as evidenced by warning signs. Since the mausoleum is also inside, access to it is limited.
