Fez

The gate of the old medina

Tlaa, Fes, Morocco

Description:

Like all Moroccan cities, Fez is traditionally divided into two parts: the old Fez el-Bali and the new Fez el-Jedid. You can get to the old part of the city by passing through the gate in the fortress wall.

The old medina, a historical center recognized as the world heritage of mankind, is today the main treasure of the city. Fortress walls around it appeared in the XI century. Around this time, Bab Ftouh, Bab Ziat, Bab Mahrouk and Bab Jdid were built.

However, the journey to the world of true history is better to start from the gates of Bab-Boo-Jelud. Located on the border of the two medinas, they serve as the main entrance to Fez al-Bali. These gates are the youngest, dating from 1912. This is a large monumental building with three horseshoe-shaped arches, a large central and two small side ones. During their construction, the defensive nature of the fortress wall was no longer taken into account, by that time this was no longer necessary. The Bab-Bu-Jelud Gate is an exceptionally decorative object. Built in the Moorish style, they repeat the architecture of the medieval buildings of the city. Outside, the gate is lined with patterned tiles in green tones, symbolizing Islam, and from the side of the old city, blue ceramics are used, which is combined with the white and blue colors of the ancient medina.
