Jema al-Fna Square
Morocco, Marrakech, Rue Moulay Ismail
Description:
Jema al-Fna is the main square of Marrakesh. It is a market, a circus, a zoo, a music scene, and the largest restaurant in the world. Life here is teeming and flourishing - thousands of merchants and beggars will do absolutely anything to shake a few coins with you. They say that in Marrakesh you can not go anywhere, but just sit in the square of Jema al-Fna and during the day the whole of Marrakech will come to you.
In the old days, the square was a "frontal place" - the severed heads of robbers, murderers and thieves were exhibited here. Then the area was increased in size to build a large mosque. But construction never started. Since then, the square has slowly turned into a spontaneous trading area. Today, the square is protected by UNESCO as an intangible spiritual heritage of mankind. Jema al-Fna is a unique place where you can still feel the atmosphere preserved from the Middle Ages.
