Kasba Udaya Fortress

Kasbah of the Udayas, Rabat, Morocco

Description:

Although the fortress of Kasba Udaya was founded in 1158, it acquired its special significance only half a century later. Then the Almohads, who seized power, led by Yaqub al-Mansour, with the help of the fortress, took full control of the entire valley of the Bou-Regreg river. Also, the almohads erected the main fortress portal in Kasbah Udaya, on which unusual images of animals have been preserved to this day.

After the fall of the almohads, the fortress of Kasbah Udaya fell into decline for several centuries. At this time, the robbers alternately hosted it. For the longest time this was possible for pirates who used the fortress for protection from European ships.

At the end of the 16th century, the fortress was rebuilt by the Alauites. Their guns, standing along the fortress wall, can be seen today.
