St. Anthony's Temple

Rivero y Gutierrez esquina Zaragoza. Centro, Aguascalientes

Description:

The temple of St. Anthony in Aguascalientes is considered the pearl of Latin American eclecticism.

The architectural masterpiece was erected in Aguascalientes according to the project of the architect Refugio Reyes. Construction of the temple began in 1895 and was completed in 1908.

Initially, this cathedral was supposed to be the main temple of the Benedictines, but later it was transferred to the Augustinian Order.

The appearance of the cathedral bizarrely combines various architectural styles - Gothic, Moorish motifs, neoclassical and Russian Baroque, which resembles an uncharacteristic for Western architecture dome above the main bell tower. The volume of the temple, realized in the form of a cross stretched upwards, ends with a huge glass dome. The interior of the temple is decorated with paintings and bas-reliefs telling about the life and wonders of St. Anthony.

In the temple there is one of the largest organs in the country, on which the best masters of music play.
