Day of Innocent Infants
Description:
At the heart of this holiday is the biblical story of the slaughter of babies by King Herod.
In Mexico, this day is considered a day of jokes. The whole world celebrates Laughter Day on April 1, and Mexico, oddly enough, on December 28.
Tradition says that when Mary carried the one-year-old Jesus past the guards sent by Herod, they asked her to show what she was carrying. Then Mary begged the sky for a miracle and, opening the bundle, all saw a bouquet of beautiful roses. Thus managed to outsmart the guards and the Holy Virgin saved the baby Jesus.
On this day, Mexicans are fooling and joking with each other and the one who is led to jokes is baptized as a “holy fool”. The most common and harmless joke is to approach a friend and ask him for a loan of some money or some value (for example, jewelry or a wristwatch). Get a candy or a trinket in return.
