Gelageza

Description:

Women in Oaxaca State National Indian Costumes
Gelagetza, or Monday on the Hill (Lunes del Cerro) is a holiday that takes place on the last two Mondays of July.

Like many other holidays in Mexico, Gelagetza is not without alcohol. The state of Oaxaca is the only place in Mexico where a special variety of tequila, the drink mezcal, is prepared. Traditional music is heard everywhere, artisans offer guests to buy their goods, and chefs from seven regions of Oaxaca - try a variety of dishes of national cuisine.

As part of the holiday, a competition is held to choose the queen - goddess Centeotl (Indian goddess of corn). Women from all regions of Oaxaca participate in the competition. The winner is chosen not only for her beauty, but also for her knowledge of local history, costumes and traditions.

The performance of Bani Stui Gulal, about how Gelagetz was celebrated in different times, as well as the legend of the Zapotec princess Donaji, is played.
