Description:
Cenote Seitun Cave is an ancient cult center of the Maya Indians. In this huge cave, ancient tribes offered gifts to the gods of rain and harvest.
Cenote Seytun is located 8 kilometers from the city of Valladolid. In the past, this place was a developed agricultural center of Chichen Itza civilization. The Maya built a temple in the cave, knocking out a number of steps in the rocky rock and building a similarity of a huge altar in an underground lake. The area got its name thanks to the round stone lying in the center of the reservoir – the stone “Seytun”, whose name can be translated as “Stone in the center of the cave”. Probably, it was from this stone that the Maya brought gifts to the goddess of corn and the god of rain and thunder, responsible for the harvest. Even today, locals leave flowers and fruits in the cave in memory of the traditional rites of their ancestors.
You can visit Cenote Seitun on the way back from Chichen Itza and Valladolid, the entrance ticket will cost 30 pesos. In addition to the picturesque steps and altar stone, you should pay attention to the bizarre limestone stalactites descending from the slope of the main cave.
