Mission San Ignacio Church
Plaza de San Ignacio, HW 1 - Km. 74, San Ignacio, Mexico
Description:
Mission San Ignacio is one of the most beautiful and ancient churches in San Ignacio. It is located in the city square. The church was built in 1728 by Juan Bautista Liwanda. Initially, the city had Indian settlements, but with the arrival of Jesuit missionaries, everything changed. The idea to build a church came to the famous Jesuit Fernando Consag.
The construction of the church was completed in 1786 under the direction of Juan Crisostomo Gomez. Plague epidemics significantly reduced the town's population from 5,000 to 120, but the church continued to operate until 1840. On its territory there is a wonderful botanical garden, which presents plants growing in the local desert. There are not only cacti, but also all small shrubs and trees.
