La Valenciana Temple

Carretera Guanajuato-Dolores Hidalgo, km. 1.5, Guanajuato, Mexico

Description:

The appearance of the temple of La Valenciana is shrouded in legend, one of which says that a Spaniard working at a local mine promised to build a temple on the site if the mine made it rich. According to another legend, the owner of the mine tried to build churches to atone for his sins associated with the exploitation of miners.

Be that as it may, the construction of the church began in 1775 under the direction of architects Andres de la Riva and Jorge Archundia and was completed in 1788.

The temple is built in Mexican style. The central dome has an octagonal shape. On the sides it is surrounded by two towers. Unfortunately, the upper part of the right tower is not preserved.

The interior of the church amazes with rich decoration of altars built in the Baroque style, filigree wood carvings and giant paintings.
