Cathedral Basilica in Leone
Alvaro Obregon Esquina con Hidalgo, Zona Centro, Leon, Mexico
Description:
The Cathedral Basilica in Leone is a Roman Catholic church located in the historic center of Leon. It is also the headquarters of Metropolitan Archdiocese of Leon.
Construction of the cathedral began in 1764 and lasted more than 100 years, of which for 60 years the construction was frozen for a number of reasons. On March 17, 1866, the cathedral was consecrated and officially opened, and in 1920 it was awarded the honorary title of basilica.
The cathedral is the historic site of the city, it has an art museum, as well as a beautifully decorated interior that can be admired every Sunday. Most of the building is decorated in neoclassical style – except for the chapel, which has an eclectic style.
On Sundays, the archbishop of the city holds a Sunday Mass here.
The cathedral is one of the most important monuments of the city.
On March 25, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI held an open-air mass with the bishops of Mexico and Latin America.
