Tolantogo Caves

San Cristobal, Cardonal, Hidalgo, Ixmiquilpan, Mexico

Description:

Tolantoy Caves are located in a closed mountain canyon 17 kilometers from Ismiquilpan.

The etymology of the word "Tolantogo" dates back to the ancient languages of the Southern Aztecs, who called the canyon "a place from which heat erupts." And indeed, water flows out from under a huge massif of rock. Mineral thermal springs heat the water in the river to 25 degrees Celsius. Deposits of salts and minerals give the water a special rich turquoise color. The flow of the river breaks through two large caves in the rocks - grottoes, which are known as "Tolantoy Caves". The Great Cave is a fifteen-meter-long karst corridor, hot water flows from its narrow walls, and the interior is shrouded in steam, which makes this place special. The second cave is famous for its stalactites and has become a popular tourist attraction.
