Karst Lakes of the Riviera Maya
Description:
On the territory of the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula with an area of about 145,000 square kilometers, more than 11,000 karst lakes were discovered. The Mayan word "dzonoot", translated "well", is used today in the Mexican version of the word "cenote" as a name for a karst lake. Cenotes (many of them) were formed during the Pleistocene period - one of the epochs of the ice age, which began about 2.5 million years ago and ended 10 thousand years BC.
The Yucatan Peninsula is permeated with a web of underground rivers and caves, it consists of limestone - a soft, porous karst rock that allows itself to be easily washed away by water and blow out the wind. As a result of the decrease in ocean level, during the Pleistocene, the water level also decreased in the underground rivers of the Yucatan Peninsula, washed themselves with new underground ways and, allowing the wind and settling soil to create unique natural formations - cenotes. The water in such wells is 70% rainy and 30% filtered, sea. The water temperature in karst lakes is constant all year round - +23. +24°C.
