Swallow cave

Swallow Cave is a cave that represents one of the deepest karst sinkholes in the world. It is located in the Mexican state of San Luis Potosi. The depth of the cave is 512 meters, while the vertical descent is considered the longest in the world and is about 370 meters. The cave used to be popular with base jumpers, but base jumping was banned several years ago by the Mexican government in order to protect the birds living in the cave.

More than 2 million birds nest in the cave, most of which, contrary to the name of the cave, are actually swifts. The departure and flight of birds into and out of the cave can be observed at dawn and at sunset. This is an impressive spectacle of nature - when thousands of bird flocks with wild haul fly out of the cave, or vice versa dive down. When diving into the cave, the speed of birds can reach 160 kilometers per second! Also, in addition to swifts, green parrots live in the cave, whose flight occurs after the flight of swifts.

In the daytime, after most birds leave their home in search of food, it is possible to descend into the cave. The descent is made with the help of climbing equipment under the guidance of experienced guides. Even if you’ve never tried climbing rocks, you have a chance to do so. Descent into the cave takes about 20-30 minutes, then the guide will give you a tour of the cave, after which you will be helped out, the climb will take about 40 minutes. If the descent into a half-kilometer cave seems too extreme, it is possible to descend on a rope to neighboring similar caves, with a depth of 150 to 200 meters.
