Dr. Alfredo Barrera Botanical Garden

El Colegio de la Frontera Sur, Av. Centenario Km 5.5, AP 424,Chetumal Quintana Roo

Description:

Dr. Alfredo Barrera Botanical Garden is located in Chetumal. Here are the plants of the tropical strip.

The Botanical Garden was established in 1982. Today it is one of the largest specialized botanical gardens in Mexico.

The collection is based on the last stretch of preserved rainforest between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Specialists of the center of Dr. Alfredo Barrera carry out scientific work on the preservation of cacti, tropical orchids, ferns, fruits, ornamental plants, palm trees and medicinal herbs growing on the Yucatan Peninsula.

The route through the garden leads through several fragmentary sections of the forest, which feature plants surrounded by traditional buildings of the Mayan era. The four-kilometer route ends at the House of Rubber, an archaeological museum of the pre-Columbian American Indian population.
