Borda Garden

Morelos Avenue, Cuernavaca

Description:

The Borda Garden is a former residence and personal park of the famous family of industrialists and patrons who glorified Cuernavaca. Today it is a city garden where music evenings are regularly held.

The Borda family advanced to the first roles in the hierarchy of colonial Mexico at the very beginning of the XVIII century. They owned silver mines and developed production. Manuel Borda, the builder and first minister of the Church of the Sepulcher of the Lord in Cuernavaca, decided to build his own house near the place of worship. In 1785, a regular park in the Andalusian style was laid - with pavilions, an artificial pond and decorative bridges. The enclosed part of the park was set aside as a private botanical garden, where rare plants gathered.

In 1865, the Borda Palace and Garden became the official residence of Maximilian Habsburg, who had been Emperor of Mexico for three short years. The park witnessed his rapid rise and tragic end – it was here that he was captured by revolutionary detachments and later executed. However, the imperial coat of arms of the Habsburgs still flaunts above the front entrance to the Borda Garden.
