The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Miguel Hidalgo 17, Centro, 62000 Cuernavaca, Morelos
Description:
The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the cathedral of the city of Cuernavaca, which was built at the beginning of the XVI century.
The church was part of a monastery founded in 1525 by twelve Franciscan monks with the aim of Christianizing the indigenous population after the Spanish conquest. The monastery was more like a fortress. It was a necessary measure to protect missionaries from the local population.
In the XVIII century, the temple worked as a city parish church, and in the XIX century it received the status of a cathedral.
The cathedral and the monastery were repeatedly restored. The last renovation took place in 1957, when the old interior elements were replaced by more modern ones. At the same time, frescoes of the XVII century were found, covering about 400 square meters of wall surfaces.
