Devil's Cave

la Glorieta Sá nchez Taboada, Mazatlan, Mexico

Description:

The Devil's Cave is a small cave on the side of a mountain that is mostly closed to visitors. The name is a folk art and has nothing to do with otherworldly forces.

Evidence suggests that the Devil’s Cave is the place where ice reserves were stored in the XIX century. Then there were no refrigerators and it was very convenient to store blocks of ice covered with salt solution in a secluded and sun-protected cave. At a later time - during the French invasion - there was a storage room for ammunition.

But, what is peculiar to people, this place is covered with some mystery and overgrown with legends. For example, it is impossible to leave a cave without getting lost, as if the devil is driving you. Inside, the room is painted with appropriate images that are on the conscience of graffiti artists. These things help maintain the somewhat mysterious image of the cave and draw attention to it. Most of the time, access is closed. Mainly for security reasons.
