Archaeological site of Santa Cecilia Acatitlan

Callejon del Tepozteco s/n, Tlalnepantla, Mexico

Description:

Santa Cecilia Acatitlan, or Acatitlan, is a monument of Mexican archaeology, which is also called the “place among the reeds”. The monument was created during the Chichimeca culture, an ancient people who lived in Mexico in the VI century. At that time, Acatitlan was located on the northwestern shores of Lake Texcoco, around which there were thickets of reeds. Nowadays, the monument is located in the town of Santa Cecilia, which belongs to the state of Mexico. After the Spanish conquered Mexico, Acatitlan was almost destroyed. It took a long time to restore it, but now it is one of the most important sights of the country.

The main part of the monument is the pyramid, which consists of a wide staircase and a temple on top, in which religious rites were once performed. During the excavations, the pyramid was collected almost by stone. An archaeological museum was opened near the site in 1961.
