Church of La Ensenanza

Mexico City, Donceles 104, Zocalo

Description:

La Ensenanza Church is located in the historic district of Mexico City. It is one of the most attractive temples in Mexico City. Officially, the church is called the Church of the Blessed Virgin Pilar.

Previously, this building was a monastery founded by Maria Ignacia Alzor. As a result of the military reform in 1867, the monastery was closed. In 1974, the building was set aside for the church.

The church building is an example of Mexican-style churricuresque architecture, which was prevalent during the Baroque era in Mexico. The church has a narrow, decorated facade that deviates slightly from the ground level.

The main decoration of the church is a golden altar decorated with figures of saints, which rises to the roof. Inside the building is a small atrium that serves as the border between the church and the monastery rooms. The vaults of the church are decorated with frescoes with images of the Virgin Pilar.
