San Bernardo Church
Venustiano Carranza esqina 20 de Noviembre, Mexico City
Description:
The Church of San Bernardo is part of the monastery of the same name, which was founded in 1636. The church is now open to visitors. Inside it is a beautiful neoclassical altar.
The church was founded by the merchant Juan Marquez de Orozco, who left his fortune to establish a monastery in Mexico City for the Cistercian Order. After Orozo's death, the Marquis of San Jorge became the benefactor of the monastery, which acquired land for the construction of the temple and monastery. In the XVIII century, Count San Mateo Valparacio renovated the church, after which it was re-consecrated in 1777.
During the reform years of Benito Juarez, all the monasteries were closed and destroyed, but the church at the monastery survived.
