Church of Santa Veracruz

Avenida Hidalgo, 37, Mexico City, Mexico

Description:

The Church of Santa Veracruz is one of the oldest religious institutions in Mexico City. The temple was founded by the religious brotherhood of Hernan Cortés.

The parish church was built in 1586. Initially, the interior of the church impressed with its luxury and wealth: a baroque altar was installed here, made of expensive wood and gold leaf. In the XVIII century, the church was rebuilt - after earthquakes and floods, it urgently needed to be restored. Since then, its appearance has survived to this day.

By the way, in the XVIII century there was a strong earthquake, prompting the use of the atrium of the temple for the burial of 488 people.
