Centro, Cuauht moc, 06000 Ciudad de M xico, D.F., Mexico
Description:
The Temple of San Felipe Neri, commonly known as La Profesa, is a Roman Catholic parish church founded in the late sixteenth century by the Jesuits. The temple was built in the baroque style of the XVII century. The church is also known for its extensive collection of colonial art.
The church almost completely destroyed the Great Flood that occurred in Mexico City in 1629. From the original design of the building remained the roof. The church was rebuilt in 1720 under the leadership of Gertrudis de la Peña, Marquis de las Torres de Rada and Pedro de Arrieta. Over time, the Jesuits decorated the church and living quarters with paintings, sculptures and other ornaments, thus collecting a large collection of religious art.
It is worth saying that in the XIX and XX centuries, a number of historical events took place in the church, for example, in the early XIX century during the Mexican War, there was a movement for independence called La Profesa Conspiracy.
