Cathedral in Mexico City

Plaza de La Constitució n S/N, Centro, Cuauht moc, 06000 Distrito Federal

Description:

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is one of the bright and unique monuments of colonial architecture. It intertwined various architectural styles: you can find elements of Baroque and Neoclassicism, Gothic and Renaissance.

Construction began in 1573 to show the world the superiority of the Spanish crown in the New World. Since its foundation, the cathedral has played an important role in the cultural, religious and political life of the country. In 1816, the coronation of Emperor Maximilian of Habsburg and Empress Charlotte of Belgium was held in this cathedral.

Unfortunately, in 1962 there was a fire in the cathedral and the building was badly damaged. However, during the restoration work, it was possible not only to restore the original appearance of the cathedral, but also to find several new works of art and important historical documents.

Despite its considerable age, the cathedral still plays a large role in the life of the local population.
