Santa Clara Monastery

Tacuba 27, Mexico City, Mexico

Description:

Santa Clara Monastery is one of Mexico’s oldest female monasteries. It was built in 1661. Like all similar monasteries, Santa Clara also has two doors on the side of the building. In 1755, the most beautiful altars of the monastery were burned, made in the Baroque style with stucco and gold. More than a hundred nuns died in this fire. The monastery was later partially restored.

But in 1861 it was completely destroyed, and the land was sold to private individuals. Only the church remains as a reminder of the monastery. It has housed the Library of Congress since 1963. The church contains securities, documents, paintings and even icons. Everyone can visit this historical place and touch the secrets of the past.
