Monastery of Santa Teresa la Antigua
Licenciado Verdad, Centro, Cuauht moc, 06000 Ciudad de M xico, D.F., Mexico
Description:
The monastery of Santa Teresa la Antigua is a baroque building with Corinthian columns and a dome decorated with stained glass windows. Unfortunately, today the monastery is not functioning - it has been hosting an alternative arts center since 1989.
The monastery was founded in 1613. The reason for this was a storm in which Archbishop Juan Perez de la Serna almost died. In honor of his salvation, he promised Saint Teresa to build a Carmelite monastery.
The church was rebuilt in 1684 and named Nuestra Senora de la Antigua. The chapel of Senor de Santa Teresa was consecrated in 1813. In 1863, the monastery building was used for public needs. It was a public barracks, a school, a national university, a printing house, and an archive of the Ministry of Finance. In 1989, an art center was opened in the monastery.
