Statue of El Caballito

Calle de Tacuba 17, Centro, Cuauht moc, 06000 Ciudad de M xico, D.F., Mexico

Description:

El Caballito is an equestrian statue depicting Charles IV and is a large sculpture in bronze.

The figure was built on August 4, 1802 and was previously located in different areas of Mexico City. The statue was created by the King of New Spain. The sculpture is currently located at the gate of Manuel Tols Palace.

Previously, the figure towered near the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, then was transported to the courtyard of an abandoned university. Many Mexicans saw the statue only as a sign of praise for the King of Spain and tried to destroy it, so the figure of Charles IV was re-established at the intersection of Paseo de Bucareli and Paseo de la Reforma, where it was guarded all the time.

Only in 1979, the figure was moved to its present location, and Mexicans began to see it as an architectural monument, not a praise of the Spanish king.
