Church of San Felipe Neri

Tinoco y Palacios at Independencia, Oaxaca, Mexico

Description:

The Baroque church of the 18th century is famous for the fact that in 1843 Benito Juarez (President of Mexico) and Margarita Maza married here.

The construction of the church of San Felipe Neri began in 1733 and continued until 1770. The tower was completed later, in the 19th century.

The temple dedicated to San Felipe Neri, a saint who delicately felt beauty, embodied this beauty in its architecture and interior decoration. Externally, the temple embodies a harmonious combination of strict canon and creative impulse, expressed in lush baroque decoration. The elegant interior is decorated with paintings depicting saints, some of them are framed by rococo medallions - it is believed that these are the first examples of this style in Mexico. The local altar with gilding is one of the most luxurious in Oaxaca. Also inside is a pantheon of dozens of graves of high-ranking priests.

In the early 20th century, the church was named a historical monument.
