Church of Santo Domingo de Guzman
Description:
The Church of Santo Domingo de Guzman, formerly a monastery, is one of the main attractions of Oaxaca. The massive building of light stone seems monumental, but full of charm and in its features is clearly visible the harsh beauty of the Middle Ages. The architecture is not quite typical for the area - in particular, high carved towers that frame the central altar part stand out.
The construction of this temple complex began in 1570 and lasted two hundred years. From the beginning of the 17th to the middle of the 19th century there was an active monastery here. The interior of the room is admirable.
Later, after the revolution, the building was turned into a stable and barracks. And only in the 20th century the premises were again consecrated and services resumed. At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, the church was restored. Inside is a small museum, which exhibits objects found during excavations in the vicinity of Oaxaca. The former monastery was also declared a historical monument.
