Benito Juarez House Museum

Garcia Vigil 609, Oaxaca, Mexico

About the company:

The house, which now houses the museum, originally belonged to the novice of the monastic order of the Franciscans, the bookbinder Antonio Salanueva. The building embodies typical features of colonial buildings of that time. This is a cozy pretty house with two courtyards. Ten years - from 1818 to 1828 - Benito Juarez, the most famous and most beloved president of Mexico, spent here. It can be said that it was in this house that Juarez began his career climb: Salanueva took part in future politics and helped him start his education.

In 1906, the year of the centenary of Juárez, the state bought this house to turn it into a collection of items that had ever belonged to Juárez. Since 1933, the building has functioned as a museum. Despite the fact that the exhibition includes items that characterize only one historical person, their selection and interaction characterize both the era and the course of historical events in Mexico. At the end of the 20th century, the museum was closed for reconstruction, but since 1996 it has been functioning again as usual.
