Fort Loreto

Zona Histó rica de Los Fuertes, Centro Histó rico, 72000 Puebla, Mexico

Description:

Fort Loreto is an ancient military building that played an important role in the Battle of Pueblo in 1862. Now there is a museum with guns, guns, sabers and other exhibits associated with this battle.

The fort is located in the northeast of Puebla, on the hill of Acueyametepec. Here in the XVI century Franciscan monks built a chapel, which eventually expanded into the temple of San Cristobal. On the west side of the hill was erected another temple dedicated to the Virgin of Loreto.

In 1816, the Spaniard Siriaco del Llano ordered the construction of stone walls around the temples. In 1930, the fort was declared a national treasure, and a military museum was opened here since 1962. It also houses the Museum of the National Institute of Anthropology and History.
