Popocatepetl volcano
National Park "Istaxihuatl Popocatepetl", 70 kilometers from Mexico City
Description:
An active volcano in northern Mexico, 70 kilometers from Mexico City. The name of the volcano comes from two words in the Nahuatl language: so far - "smoking" and tepetl - "hill", that is, Smoky hill. The last major volcanic eruption was in 820. Since then, for twelve centuries, it only occasionally ejects clouds of volcanic gases, ash and red-hot pieces of lava.
The height of the volcano is 5,426 meters, it is the second largest peak in Mexico after the volcano Orisaba. Popocatepetl is associated with the nearby volcano Istaxihuatl high saddle, known as Paso de Cortez.
