Manuel Ponce Museum

Fresnillo

About the company:

The Manuel Ponce Museum in Fresnillo gives an opportunity to visit the memorial apartment of an outstanding Mexican musician and educator, a native of the state of Zacatecas.

Manuel Maria Ponce was born in Fresnillo on December 8, 1882. His father, a respected and wealthy man, moved the family to Aguascalientes, where the future composer spent his childhood. Ponce already at the age of 4 showed outstanding abilities in music. In 1901 he entered the National Conservatory and immediately established himself as the leading musician of his time. The compositions of Ponce for guitar and piano are noteworthy: they are based on the national motifs of Sacates and Aguascalientes. The composer collaborated with pop artists, his authorship belongs to several popular songs.

The museum in Fresnillo is located in the small Ponce family home where Manuel was born. Interestingly, in adulthood, the musician almost never visited this house, he lived in Mexico City and Havana, but grateful citizens insisted on the opening of the memorial museum. Today it features photographs, letters and sheets of music autographed by the outstanding native Fresnillo.
