El Eden Mine

Cerro del Grillo, Caminera, 98045 Zacatecas, ZAC, Mexico

Description:

Mina El Eden is now a local landmark and has a tragic history: many thousands of Indians were turned into slaves and died here, mining the Spanish conquerors silver.

Currently, the mine is open to visitors and is a museum, so tourists can see what conditions slaves were supposed to be in. Dragging kilogram bags of ore, workers died of exhaustion. Soon the overseers decided to use explosives in the mine, however, having no experience, did not calculate the force of the charge that flooded the lower level of Mina El Eden. The Indians were no longer exploited as slaves and El Eden was closed.

Visitors are shown flooded and remote areas of the mine, and for naturalness in many tunnels there are figures of miners. The opening hours of the mine are from 10:00 to 18:00, and the entrance to its territory costs 70 Mexican pesos per person.
