Church of Tonantzintla
Miguel Hidalgo numero 4, San Andres Cholula, Mexico
Description:
Tonantzintla Church is the main church of San Andres Cholula, which is visited annually by hundreds of Mexican and foreign tourists. The construction of the church began in the XVI century. By the end of the XVII century, an altar, a dome and a sacristy were already built. It was this period of time that was famous for decorative stucco. Historians have counted four stages of the construction of the church, which cover the XVI - XIX centuries. The first phase of construction began in the middle of the XVI century with a small tomb.
At the second stage of construction in the late XVII and early XVIII century, the building was almost completed. The third stage was the most important and covered most of the XVIII century. At the fourth stage in the nineteenth century, the church was completely finished. The interior corresponds to the style of Spanish Baroque. Inside the church you can see angels with feathers decorated with garlands of flowers. There are also images of fertile plants. All this shows a combination of the Christian and pre-Hispanic worlds.
