Description:
Fort San Juan Ulua is a fort built during the Spanish colonial era in 1565. It is located in a large complex with a fortress on the island. The fort was captured by Miguel Barragana in November 1825. For most of the nineteenth century, it served as a prison, especially for political prisoners. Many prominent Mexican politicians spent time here while incarcerated.
Currently there is a museum in the fort.
Fort San Juan Ulua also served as a presidential palace for figures such as Benito Juarez and Venestiano Carranza. After several years of decline, the complex has been completely restored and repair work continues to this day. Prisons and fortresses are open to the public except for the former presidential palace, which has suffered severe decline.
