Janaki Temple

Janakpur 45600, Nepal

Description:

The Hindu temple of Janaka is dedicated to Rama’s wife, the goddess Sita, who also has a middle name – Janaki. The temple is an example of Hindu and Rajput architecture.

The three-storey stone marble temple was built by Queen Brisabhanu Kunvari of India in 1911. 900,000 rupees were spent on its construction. In the local language, the temple is also known as “Hai Lakha Mandir” or “Temple of the Nine Rupees”. The dome of the temple reaches 50 meters in height.

Inside the temple there are 60 halls, which are decorated with colored glass, engravings, paintings, beautiful windows with bars and turrets. The main attractions of the temple are the statues of Sita, Rama and Rama brothers – Bharat, Lakshman and Shatrugna. In 1657, a statue of the goddess Sita was found on the site of the temple. On the steps you can reach the roof of the temple and from there see the city and its surroundings.

Thousands of pilgrims visit the temple in November and December, when Rama and Sita are married. Modern weddings are also often held these days.
