Sagarmata National Park
Sagarmatha National Park, Sagarmatha, Nepal
Description:
Sagarmata National Park is a protected area in the Himalayas in eastern Nepal containing the southern part of Mount Everest. The park was established on July 19, 1976 and inscribed on the Natural Heritage List in 1979.
Sagarmata (the Sanskrit word for "sky" and Mata for "head" or "head") is the modern Nepalese name for Mount Everest.
The park covers an area of 1,148 square kilometers in the Solukhumbu area and is located at an altitude of 2,845 meters. 69% of the park’s land is barren, while 28% is pasture and the remaining 3% is forested. Most of the park area is very bumpy and steep. The entire area of the park is cut by deep rivers and glaciers. Unlike other parks, this park can be divided into four climatic zones due to rising altitude. Climate zones include the lower forest zone, the alpine shrub zone, the upper alpine zone, which includes the upper limit of vegetation growth, and the Arctic zone, where plants cannot grow. All species of animals and plants in the park depend on the height at which they are located.
